Partner 1: UK.  Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs

The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) was created in 2001 as a new department to take forward the UK Government’s programmes on the environment, food and rural affairs. Defra’s remit is the pursuit of sustainable development, weaving together economic, social and environmental concerns.  Defra, through the Fisheries Directorate, has overall policy responsibility for fisheries management in England and Wales and is the lead department for UK negotiations under the CFP. The Fisheries Directorate’s aims are to promote and support a sustainable and competitive fishing industry, to manage fish stocks to maintain maximum sustainable yield, to help protect the marine environment, and to conserve whale and other cetaceans.
