The SFI, founded in 1921, is a multidisciplinary scientific research and consultancy institution, specialising in fisheries science and management, oceanography, marine, coastal and estuarine ecology incl. environmental monitoring, fish processing technologies and fishery economics.
The main task of the institute is to develop and provide scientific foundations for the rational use and exploitation of living marine resources. Research carried out by the institute forms basis for establishing catch limitsand developing technical measures aimed at conservation and the sustainable exploitation of fish stocks. Within the thematic focus of the proposal the Institute manages research on the Baltic Sea fishery resources (stock assessment and management, biology, ecology and recruitment mechanisms of selected fish species). The overall tasks of SFI fit closely to the ICES Strategic Plan and to the majority of the priorities for scientific research in support of Common Fisheries Policy of the EU (e.g. scientific bases of integrated fisheries management).
