FRS

FRS is an executive agency within SEERAD, the devolved Scottish Ministry for Environment and Rural Affairs, and is fully responsible for the provision of scientific advice to SEERAD on the management of fisheries and aquaculture. FRS has a science programme that is prepared in consultation with SEERAD, but is the responsibility of the FRS Chief Executive.
FRS has three main programme related to marine fisheries. These are:
- Fisheries Management Programme provides advice on the sustainable management of marine fisheries founded on a programme of research, monitoring and assessment of the marine resources around Scotland.
- Aquaculture and Aquatic Animal Health Programme supports a healthy and sustainable aquaculture industry and safeguards the health of wild fish stocks through regulation and scientific advice supported by high quality research.
- Marine Ecosystems Programme carries out research which provides the scientific basis for an ecosystem approach to fisheries management and to deliver advice on specific issues relating to the sustainability of fisheries, conservation, and the impact of climate change on living marine resources.
